I was born in Bo, Sierra Leone. My earliest memory is of walking. Walking before the sun was up. Walking past empty stomachs and rainy seasons. Walking because my mother told me that an education was the only thing in this world no one could take from me. I believed her, even on the days when I did not understand why.

When the civil war came, the walks did not stop. They became more dangerous, more uncertain, more haunted by what we had lost. But I kept walking. So did many children whose names I still remember. Not all of them made it.

A Quiet Vow

Years later, a scholarship took me to the United States. I sat in classrooms with books I never had to share. I had teachers who knew my name. I had electricity. I had quiet to study in. And every time I looked around, I thought of the children who would never know this kind of room.

I made a promise then, quiet but firm. One day, I would build back home the schools I always wished existed.

Taking Shape

Ray Foundation is that promise, taking shape. We are not a large nonprofit. We do not have offices in many countries. We are a small group of people, mostly volunteers, who believe that one classroom built well is worth more than a hundred promises.

So far we have built 7 classrooms, reached over 500 children, and served 3 communities. We are not done.
